We recently sat down with Marie Claire’s Accessories Director, Kyle Anderson who shared with us his Top 10 Picks for Best Holiday/Winter Accessories.  Check out his picks and ready yourself for a full-on schooling on all things fab.

 1.  I’m a huge fan of Kenneth Jay Lane jewelry. I visit the studio about once a month to look for cool new pieces for whatever kind of photoshoot we have going on. Its a staple for all of our stylists. This diamante statement necklace is a steal that looks like a million bucks. Its glam and dressy but still has a cool young edge.

2. You cannot go wrong with one of these little key necklaces. Its just something you can throw on for day or evening- dressy or casual. Its cute and flirty and a classic.

3. Love these black rainboots. They have a cool motorcycle feeling to them.  While, I’m NOT a fan of bright yellow rainboots, these are an awesome option for a rainy day.

4. these peep toe black booties are perfect for day and evening. The peep toe and open back give them a great sexy evening feeling while the bootie side of them makes them great for work and running around 9-5.

5. This brown luggage leather satchel bag from Claudia is the perfect day bag for throwing in everything you need and not having to carry around a gigantic purse. I love the school boy utililty look of it.

6. a black classic chain link leather purse never goes out of style. I never get sick of them and its another great bag that can go from office to dinner to going out at night. Its the perfect size for whatever your day takes you.

7. Little ‘camera bags’ like this one in this great soft brown color have been a big trend for Spring Season 2012. Perfect for when you don’t want to carry a Purse and wants a day of Hands free time when u just don’t want to carry a handbag.

8. More and more designers are going back to the classic top handle lady bag as we call them which are a little bit inspired by the iconic bags that stars like grace kelly wore in the 50s. This one is perfect in black and has a chic simple design.

9. this La Regale simple clutch is a great option for whatever your evening look is. I could see it going edgy with leather and metal and has a chic and simple design.

10. The pointy toe pump is at its all time popularity with designers on the runway for spring summer 12. This is the perfect shape for everyday from Bruno Magli.

I am the SVP (Senior Vice President) of Visual Merchandising and Store Experience.

What, you may ask, is “Visual Merchandising?”  And what in the world is “Store Experience?”

Well, not so easy to explain –  but I’ll try.

I’ve been challenged with the task of elevating the store experience and visual presentations (elevating the eye candy).

Basically I need to know “what” will have mass appeal and portray that through mannequin styling, window presentations, merchandise placement, marketing, music and the list goes on.

I’ve been with the LOEHMANN’S for 2 months now, and as the die hard shopper that I am, I have to say, I am thoroughly impressed with our mix of product and amazingly low price points.  To be honest, I’m not sure I should even bother collecting my paycheck as I think I’ll be giving most of it right back through purchases.  Yikes!!

Fur, Fur, Fur… (faux fur of course)

Honestly anything faux fur goes.  I love a fur vest, it’s so versatile!

Dress it up? Yes please.

Dress it down? Not gonna happen!

Wear fur over a sweater or with a dress, you can dress up a denim shirt or tee, and dress down a blouse.  Add instant chic to a classic skirt or your favorite pair of jeans.  A fur vest can even be layered over a gown…yes I said it…a gown!

I’ve been seeing tons of faux fur accessories too, so chic!!

Fur trimmed handbags and boots, fur gloves, fur muffles, fur hats.

Choose any or all! Just don’t wear them all together – looking like Chewbacca from Star Wars is never a good look!!!

Shine On

Who doesn’t love a bit of sparkle in their life?

Sequins are so hot right now.  You can never go wrong with a sequined trim top, or allover sequined dress, even a sequined mini or short (obviously the sequined short is not for me…I’m a 5’3″, 38 year old mother, NO WAY…but for a youthful 20-something gal, FABULOUS!)

Not a fan of sequins… Well you can still get your “Shine On” with a satin or charmeuse blouse, lurex woven sweater, foil printed tee, or metallic leather accessory.

Booties…they’re not just for babies!!!

I heart a great pair of Booties.  Choose from a wedged heel, chunky heel or skinny heel in either leather or suede, or for the daring, animal print is AMAZING!!!

Throw them on with any ensemble and you’ll instantly transform your look from drab to fab!

Denim in Living Color

I try so hard NOT to be a slave to fashion and throw my money away on fast trends, but I love me some colored denim.  Think I bought 5 pairs this fall alone.  OMG!!!

They make me HAPPY !!!

You’ve gotta have some fun with fashion, and denim is the easiest article of clothing to take a risk with.

The key with colored denim is to wear it like you would your regular old blue jeans. DO NOT do matchy matchy, you’ll look like you’re wearing Garanimals…great for babies – not for adults!!!

I wear my teal skinny jeans with a plain white tee or with a black and white animal printed blouse.

I paired up an oversized grey sweater with my rust colored jeans.

Super easy, so much fun!

Now for your “Gotta Have” fashion staples.

1. a great fitting Black Blazer
2. a Skinny Jean (preferably 2 pairs, Blue and Black)
3. an Oversized Sweater (I love grey…goes with any color)
4. an amazing pair of Stilettoes (go for red…..trust me men love red heels!!!)
5. a great White Shirt
6. a Cuff or Big Bracelet (large enough to see if you’re wearing long sleeves)
7. a Pearl Necklace (multiple strands give this “lady like” accessory more attitude)
8. a versatile “indoor” Scarf (in solid color or print, polishes off any look)
9. a LBD (no explanation needed…wear to any occasion)
10. an oversized Tote (go for a fun color…I have an electric blue one

#LuckyNumber11 – Denim Shirt (Not Chambray, DENIM)

Jackets, blazers and vests were all over the runways for Fall/Winter 2011-12.  I saw everything from cinched silhouettes at Peter Som to color blocked plaid at DKNY to metallic polka dots at Marc Jacobs.  But not every style fits all.  While I, I mean we all , strive to be thinner and taller in what we wear most of the trends I saw on those size zero’s can be a huge miss if fashion victims don’t know how to wear them.

“Trust, the last thing you want is to come across a pic of you with a black bar across your face with the words “what is she wearing” above it.  LOL!!!”

When it comes to wearable jacket runway trends I say don’t be so literal and look for styles that flirt with the trend as opposed to diving right in and wearing the entire trend in one look.  Oy vey is all I have to say.  For example orange is a big color for the season and Celine showed a stunning coat at the runway show priced over $3,400.

Lets say you like the color but don’t love the price or the thought of wearing so much orange. I say accessorize it!  I.e., dress it up with a scarf, purse or even gloves and accent what you’re wearing with the “it” color. This way, you’re on trend with a look that fits you and your lifestyle.

Prabal Gurung’s Fall 2011 RTW Runway show gave us the perfect example of how women can wear a blazer with a touch of this season’s trend… lace, worn over a formal evening gown.   What made Prabal Gurung’s look such a success you ask?  Well, he balanced out the proportions by color blocking the two main pieces (white blazer and black dress) and tied them together by cinching the blazer at the waist with a black belt and brought the look together with the black lace panels on the blazer.

“This ensemble shows how you can be chic, elegant and on trend with a cover-up that compliments an elegant gown as opposed to looking like a hot mess in something that is more function than fashion -like a heavy wool coat or puffer which are major DON’TS!”

Loose the jacket and the dress takes on a personality of its own.  Well-done Prabal!

Now for you quirky victims, DKNY showed us how you can have fun with your outerwear by wearing an oversized cardi to the party.  This oversized cardi adds a bit of quirky to a basic dress but is balance by bold color blocking, which is key.  Since this ensemble is so covered up on top, DKNY made sure to keep the dress short and legs bare to bring in the sexy.

“This is an important style tip with this look because the last thing you want is to be over dressed, and I don’t mean wearing an evening gown to a baseball game, at a party where all the gals are in cocktail dresses and you’re dressed like a Nun!”

You can totally wear tights with this ensemble for a more mod look but be sure to go monochromatic with the lower half so not to distract from the upper half.  I always say choose one and work around it.  In this case, DKNY chose the upper half… An oversized cardi worn over a basic dress is a chic alternative to a blazer or jacket.  This little number shows how you can wear two of this season’s hottest color trends together without popping a stitch.

Now lets say you’re not a dress gal but love to wear trousers… well Wes Gordon showed us how you can keep it covered up but still look chic and sexy with a cropped jacket.  A cropped jacket elongates your torso and can make your legs appear longer.

“It’s important to know that when a pairing jacket, whether it’s cropped or classic, with a cocktail or evening dress you MUST consider the fabric.  If an outfit is formal, avoid pairing it with informal fabrics like denim, flannel, fleece or corduroy.  While it may be a great editorial look, rarely does it translate well on the everyday person.”

Cropped tweed Jackets like Wes Gordon’s, with its feature collar and double breasting, is what I like to call a double duty wardrobe.   This can be worn with formal or informal outfits.   If you can think of more than two ways to wear what you’re buying then you are totally getting your monies worth.

Marc New York Belted Cape Coat

While capes are intriguing, most women fret with how to wear one without looking like Sherlock Holmes.  It’s a-line unstructured style can be unflattering if worn incorrectly.  I love a cropped cape with a pencil fit dress or skinny trouser so you’re giving the illusion of an hourglass shape even though the cape is so voluminous.  By narrowing the lower half of your look you’ve tricked the eye to see shape where the may not be any.

DKNY Single-Breasted Brocade Jacket

The classic single-breasted knee- length jacket/coat is a timeless option that works well with pantsuits, knee length or short dresses.  As seen above this chic DKNY style suits most every body type and is most flattering.  But again, what sets an everyday jacket or coat apart from an evening look is its fabric.  Look for fabrics like brocade, velvet, cashmere, fur or silk blends. Some come with detachable collars and embellishments.

Rochas Doubleface Trapeze Coat

A full-length coat looks best with an evening gown, but be sure its fitted and your proportions aren’t off.

“I.e., wear a flowy topper with a slim dress, an empire line coat/jacket over a flowy dress or a slim topper with a slim dress.  Never EVER wear a flowy topper with a flowy dress; otherwise you’ll look larger than life!”

Helmut Lang always makes the best drapey clothing!  If you are going to buy one sweater this season, this would be my pick because of the great color and style…definitely not your Grandma’s sweater.

I love this sweater too and it’s a lot less expensive.  I think plunging cowlnecks are sexy!

Rag & Bone is one of my go-to brands for classic pieces with an edge.  Everything I buy from them never seems to go out of style.  These leggings are a great staple for any wardrobe.

A great pair of leggings from Topshop.  These are flattering and unique with the leather striping down the side.

If you are tired of wearing that same LBD, just put on these funky dot tights and you have a new outfit!  I am doing a lot of shopping in my closet these days so spending a little on great accessories is the perfect way to update your existing wardrobe.  I recently wore these with an old solid black Chanel dress and felt like I was sporting a whole new look.

Another fab and more affordable option for a bootie. These are a bit more casual in leather but also cut wide by the ankle so they are very flattering on the leg.

I have been looking for the perfect every day bag in leopard for months, and found this one during a quick break for shopping at Kitson while on a recent trip to LA.  A fun but timeless classic.

After purchasing my Rebecca Minkoff bag (which I do love), I found this one from ASOS. This really IS the look for less!

No matter what season or occasion, there’s just a natural ease and simplicity about embracing a bit of facial hair (minus the hard neck-lining…unless you’re going to a leather bar, let it grow!) and being able to run your fingers through your hair without leaving your hands coated in product.  The sex appeal mostly comes from looking sharp without looking like you’ve spent hours to achieve it.

This is one of my favorite facts about the long march through Fall/Winter (especially over the past few years), that the transition to heavier fabrics lends itself well to complementing a more masculine look.  But, where men typically fall short is in the details.  Born from necessity (those NorEasters can be frightfully cold!), the mistake is often made to match the dreary shift into shorter daylight hours by layering on heavy sweaters and bulky jackets in unimpressive shades of black or brown.

Well, with the continued rise of paisleys, plaids and gingham checks (you should already own dress shirts, ties and pocket squares in all three), this season is all about enhancing your masculinity instead of covering it up with boring and muting it down with a yawn.  Think wingtip shoes and vintage work boots; mid-weight, micro-wale cords in unconventional colors such as pine and plum; twill dress shirts with wool ties.  Then, pull those more detailed pieces together with a simple V-neck sweater or cardigan in a neutral color (read neutral vs. dark: cream, grey, navy and lighter/richer shades of brown work nicely).

For those required to suit up for the office, rock a flannel one instead of that wool stalwart you’ve worn forever, pairing with plaid shirt and knitted tie. Ditch the tie or change into a denim shirt after work, and I guarantee you’ll turn some heads and maybe even get a number or two at the bar.  Whatever you wear, do it with confidence—and be careful not to overdo it!

Remember, men: it’s about paying attention to the details without all the fussiness and dandy-ism more appropriate for 20-something hipsters.
